YANGON, Oct 5 — In what might be the most ambitious — and least financially astute — robbery in recent memory, a man in Myanmar spent nine days digging a tunnel to break into a gold jewellery shop, only to be apprehended three days after his haul.
The 4kg of gold he stole, valued at tens of thousands of dollars, apparently proved irresistible only long enough for him to buy a mobile phone.
The rest he stashed at home, presumably to admire from a safe distance.
According to Shin Chew Daily, citing MeKong News, the man, a car wash employee by day, spent his nights tunnelling under the street outside the shop.
His inspiration came from a collapsed sidewalk he had observed in 2024, which revealed a surprisingly spacious underwater piping system.
Spotting a similar setup near the jeweller, he decided the underground route was preferable to more conventional break-ins.
Surveillance footage shows him dressed entirely in black, headlamp aglow, as he entered the shop while its shutters were still closed — a level of planning worthy of a caper film, if only the outcome had been more lucrative.
He admitted to police that he was unsure exactly how much gold he had taken.
The day after the robbery, he sold 551g of it for roughly RM275,000, tucked away another RM265,000 at home, and spent a mere RM1,175 on a phone.
The jewellery shop confirmed about 4kg of gold had been stolen, leaving authorities to wonder if more was lost in translation — or perhaps just hidden in a very modest cupboard.
