BEIJING, Sept 9 — China experienced its hottest summer since 1961 while the north endured its longest rainy season over the same period, the national weather authority said today, with scientists linking the extremes to climate change.
The summer “Plum Rains” — named for their timing with plum ripening along the Yangtze River during the East Asia Monsoon — began one week earlier than usual, said Huang Zhou, deputy director of the China Meteorological Administration.
Large swathes of the country also endured searing heat, with an average of 13.7 high-temperature days, 5.7 days more than normal for June to August, Huang said.
The national average temperature was 22.3 degrees Celsius, 1.1C above normal, tying 2024 as the hottest since 1961.
This year, China was simultaneously hit by a stubborn subtropical high-pressure system bringing hot, dry weather, and the East Asian monsoon, whose torrential rains killed hundreds of people and caused billions of dollars in economic losses.
The extremes threaten ageing flood defences, risk displacing millions, strain power grids and damage crops.
In late July, Beijing’s northern Huairou district and neighbouring Miyuan received a year’s worth of rain in a single week, triggering flash floods that killed 44 people in the country’s deadliest flood since 2012.
China does not release figures on heat-related deaths, but a 2023 report in The Lancet estimated 50,900 people died from heatwaves in 2022, double the number in 2021.
Globally, August 2025 was the third-warmest August, with temperatures 0.49C above the 1991–2020 average, the EU-funded Copernicus Climate Change Service said. The two hottest Augusts on record were in 2023 and 2024.
Most of the northern Pacific saw above-average sea surface temperatures last month, hitting record highs in many areas, Copernicus added in its monthly bulletin. — Reuters
