Reuters: No increase in Qatar’s financial support to Turkey in light...

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan concluded his visit to Qatar without announcing major deals or any indication that Doha would increase direct financial assistance, at a time when Turkey is grappling with a historic collapse of the lira.

A joint statement by the two sides said Erdogan and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani signed 15 agreements in areas ranging from media to disaster management and pledged to explore more ways to strengthen economic ties and financial coordination.

The statement stated that Qatar agreed to extend a currency swap agreement with Turkey, which Doha tripled to $15 billion last year. The agreement aims to boost Turkey’s foreign reserves and stabilize the lira.

The Turkish Foreign Minister had said in a press briefing Monday that Ankara was not planning to ask Doha for financial assistance, while his Qatari counterpart said that Doha was looking at opportunities arising from Turkey’s economic challenges.

Before leaving Doha, Erdogan visited the Turkish soldiers at the military base, and addressed them: “We do not separate the security and stability of Qatar from our security and stability,” mentioning Dohas contributions to “investment in Turkey, employment, production and export-oriented growth.”
