American fighter in the airspace of Syria and Iraq
The New York Times reported on Saturday that the US military covered up two air strikes it carried out on Syria in 2019 that killed approximately 64 women and children, a possible war crime.
وبحسب the report, two successive air strikes near the village of Baghouz were carried out by order of a secret US special operations unit tasked with ground operations in Syria.
The newspaper said that the US Central Command, which oversaw US air operations in Syria, acknowledged the two strikes for the first time in recent days, saying that they were justified.
In a statement today, Saturday, the Central Command reiterated the story it told the newspaper about the killing of 80 people in the two strikes, including 16 ISIS fighters and four civilians.
The military said it was not clear if the other 60 were civilians, in part because the women and children may have been combatants.
