Indian police in Odisha have arrested a 17-year-old man accused of selling his wife to a 55-year-old man for 180,000 rupees (about $2,400).
The newspaper “India Today” said that the Odisha state police managed to rescue a woman who had been sold by her husband to another man in the northwestern state of Rajasthan.
The newspaper reported that the accused is Rajesh Rana from Solekela village in Bolanger district in Odisha, and he married the woman just two months ago.
“The teen communicated with the woman via social media and they both fell in love, after which their family agreed to marry them off in a traditional way,” Polo Munda, Inspector-in-Charge at Bilbada Police Station, told India Today.
In August, the couple went to Rajasthan to work in a brick kiln. “A few days after his new job, Rajesh sold his wife to a 55-year-old man from Baran district,” said Paulo Munda, who was part of the team that rescued the woman from a village in Rajasthan.
He continued, “After “selling” his wife, Rajesh spent lavishly on eating and even bought a sophisticated smartphone,” noting that the accused called the girl’s father and claimed that she ran away with another person.
The woman’s family did not believe Rajesh’s story and filed a complaint with the police, where a team was formed to investigate the matter.
According to the newspaper, the police managed to rescue the girl and return her to her family, noting that the young man later stated that he did not sell his wife, but rather mortgaged her for 60,000 rupees for heart surgery, but the court did not believe his allegations and ordered him to be placed in a special institution for reform and discipline.
