The head of the “Baalbek-Hermel Parliament”, MP Hussein Hajj Hassan, said that the “reasons of the fuel crisis” in the country lie in:“The collapse of the political, economic, financial and monetary situation, which led to a decline in the financial reserves of the Banque du Liban, and to the faltering of the banking and economic system, which led to a scarcity of the amount of hard currency available to secure imports.

The collapse of the price of the Lebanese currency against the dollar, which had an impact on fuel prices.

The irregular provision of credits for importing fuels, and the dispute that occurred between the executive authority and the monetary authority represented by the governor of the Banque du Liban, who disrupted the import of fuels for a period of time. The state’s laxity and negligence in pursuing smugglers and monopolists, the failure to put in place a serious and appropriate mechanism to prevent monopoly and smuggling, and leaving the market for these to escape and store large quantities of diesel, gasoline and gas, and the absence of a real deterrent to them.

In an interview with Al-Nour Radio, Hajj Hassan said: “All this led to a scarcity of quantities in the market and a very high demand for it.”

He added, “All the solutions that were proposed are still insufficient to find a solution to the gasoline queues, the loss of diesel fuel in the market, and its high prices.”

He considered that “solutions lie in the following: securing fuel for Electricité du Liban to reduce rationing hours, and in this context, securing fuel from Iraq, which will reach Lebanon by the tenth of next September, securing sustainability for opening credits to purchase fuels from abroad, and controlling Monopolists and smugglers, punishing them, prosecuting them and bringing them to justice, in order to prevent monopoly and smuggling, in addition to the issuance of the financing card as compensation for the gradual shortage in the process of subsidizing fuel, medicine, and others.

He stressed that “Hezbollah is in the process of bringing fuel to Lebanon from Iran, and the details of this matter are with the party’s leadership, especially Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah, with the aim of alleviating people’s suffering and breaking the monopoly and siege.”
