In 30 to 85% of symptomatic cases of Covid-19, patients experience a total or partial loss of taste andsmell. If most of the time, the smell returns after ten days, for some patients, several months are necessary to feel the smells again as before the disease. A new application could no doubt help them regain their sense of smell as quickly as possible.

Covid-19 and loss of smell

Soon after the onset of the Covid-19, loss of taste and / orsmell has become a characteristic symptom, usually associated with mild forms of the disease. This loss of taste and smell occurs in at least a third of patients. Depending on the case, it manifests itself by:

  • Anosmia when the loss of smell is complete;
  • Hypo-osmia, when part of the sense of smell is preserved.

In the majority of cases, this disturbing symptom disappears with the rest of the symptoms a few days after infection. But in some cases, it lasts for several weeks or even months. In this context, the French start-up Kelindi launched on January 12, 2021 a new web application, called Covid-Anosmie. This application aims to help patients who have lost their sense of smell for a long time to recover all their olfactory and taste sensations as well as possible.

An application to regain your sense of smell after Covid-19

This application is based on a coaching of the patient and a real rehabilitationsmell, with personalized follow-up. It is reserved for patients who have been affected by Covid-19 and having lost the sense of smell. It is not suitable for people who have lost only taste. Before using the application, it is therefore essential to distinguish:

  • Anosmia or hypo-osmia;
  • Ageusia: the lack of perception of taste;
  • Parosmia: dysfunction in the perception of odors (confusion of odors).

Currently, this protocol olfactory rehabilitation is being evaluated for odor disorders specifically related to Covid-19, as part of a trial conducted with the Tours University Hospital. This test will make it possible to precisely determine the rate and speed to regain the sense of smell after a Covid-19.
