A mysterious metal pillar has been discovered in a heather in the Netherlands – there had previously been similar sensational finds in the USA, Great Britain and Romania. “We know that it was probably set up at the weekend,” said Imke Boerma from the Dutch Forest Service on Monday. “But we don’t know how it got there.”
Hikers discovered the column on Sunday near the Kiekenberg nature reserve in Friesland, according to Boerma. Foresters inspected the property on Monday and looked for clues to its origin.
The object that has now been found in the Netherlands is silver, but unlike the pillars previously found, it does not have a shiny surface, as it was called on the local broadcaster Omrop Fryslan.
The pillar’s discoverer, Thijs de Jong, told the broadcaster that it looked like the pillar “fell from the sky”. It “must have taken two or more people” to transport the column onto the heath. However, he couldn’t see any traces around the object. He suspects an artist collective behind the action.
The riddle about the origin of the columns has not yet been completely solved: various artists want to be the authors of the monoliths in the USA.
