Hind Al Soulia - Riyadh - DOHA — Qatar confirmed on Sunday that a commercial cargo vessel was struck by a drone in the country’s territorial waters, causing a limited fire but no injuries.
In a statement posted on X, Qatar’s Ministry of Defense said the vessel, which was traveling from Abu Dhabi, was targeted on Sunday morning northeast of Mesaieed Port.
The ministry said the attack caused a “limited fire” aboard the ship, adding that the blaze was quickly brought under control without any reported casualties.
Following the incident, the vessel resumed its voyage toward Mesaieed Port, according to the ministry.
Qatari authorities said necessary measures had been taken in coordination with relevant agencies, without providing additional details about the attack or those responsible.
Earlier, the UK Maritime Trade Operations Center reported that a cargo vessel had been struck by an “unknown projectile” approximately 23 nautical miles northeast of the Qatari capital Doha.
The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions following US and Israeli strikes against Iran on Feb. 28, which triggered attacks by Tehran against Israel and US allies in the Gulf region, alongside the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
A ceasefire took effect on April 8 through Pakistani mediation efforts, but negotiations held later in Islamabad failed to secure a permanent agreement.
The truce was subsequently extended by US President Donald Trump without a specified deadline, allowing diplomatic efforts to continue toward a broader resolution to the conflict.
