Peter Kigen, 32, suffers from a chronic illness and, when he passed out at home on Tuesday, he was transported to Kapkatet hospital in the municipality of Kericho, where he was presumed dead. Three hours later, when the morgue professionals were preparing to embalm him, starting by making an incision in Peter’s right leg, the man felt and woke up crying with pain.

The patient’s younger brother, Kevin Kipkurui, told the Kenyan newspaper The Standard that the nurse informed him that Peter had died before arriving at the hospital. Denis Langat, the man’s uncle, also told local television channel Citizen TV that the hospital staff said they had “casually checked” the condition of their nephew before declaring his death.

Quoted by The Standard, Peter said, directly from his hospital bed, that he was “happy to be alive” and promised “to dedicate his life to evangelism”.
