TPA presents reports on corruption in Angola

Angola Public Television (TPA) started, on Monday, the presentation of a series of 11 reports entitled “O Banquete”, which shows how high figures of the State took advantage of their positions to use the purse to their own advantage, before 2017.

The reports, presented by journalist Ernesto Bartolomeu, denounce a series of illicit enrichment schemes, to the detriment of the State and the majority of Angolans.

In the first program, broadcast on Monday’s Newspaper, TPA showed how supposedly the former chairman of Sonangol’s Board of Directors, Manuel Vicente, the president of SONIP’s Executive Committee, subsidiary of the then national concessionaire, Orlando Veloso, used personal companies to take hundreds of millions of dollars from the State, through the Miramar Empreendimentos, Limitada consortium.

The consortium was formed between Sonangol, Suninvest, the financial arm of the Eduardo dos Santos Foundation (FESA), and Namkwang International for the construction of three buildings and a luxury hotel in the Intercontinental chain.

Yesterday’s report focused on the figure of Joaquim Sebastião, former director of the Angolan Highway Institute (INEA), who in July last year had to return real estate, vehicles and other assets worth 45 million dollars to the State, after several months in remand, accused of embezzlement. In the report, TPA denounces schemes involving several figures, with Joaquim Sebastião at the center, acting as a player and referee, with several works by INEA to be carried out by companies of the director general himself or by close people, resulting in embezzlement of public funds.
