Utah wildlife officers accidentally discovered the structure as they were helicopter touring a desert part of the southern state to count the population of Canadian bighorn sheep that live there.

“This is the strangest thing I have seen in all my years of flying,” helicopter pilot Bret Hutchings told local KSLTV, adding that the column appeared to have been created. by humans and be well established in the ground.

The work of an artist?

In a statement, the Utah Department of Public Safety said there is “no obvious clue” as to who is behind the structure.

The Guardian suggests the name of artist John McCracken, who lived in New Mexico, near Utah, before his death. Some of his works can indeed make one think of the metal column.

State services have reminded, not without humor, that it is illegal to install structures or works of art without authorization on public land, “regardless of the planet from which one comes” .
