Mozilla: Firefox 85 comes without support for Adobe Flash and NPAPI plug-ins

The release will be on January 26th. Firefox ESR supports the Flash plug-in until July 2021. However, Adobe will generally prevent the execution of Flash content from January 2021 – exceptions are possible for enterprise customers.

Mozilla has the date for the end of support from Adobe Flash confirmed. According to current plans, Firefox 84 will be the last version of the Mozilla browser to support Flash on December 14th. The final end will come on January 26th, 2021 with version 85, which not only supports Flash, but also any NPAPI plug-ins.

Like other browser manufacturers, Mozilla only implements an announcement from Adobe that it will “take Flash off the market” on January 13th. From this date the Flash plug-in will no longer load Flash content.

Since Flash was the last plug-in that Mozilla supported via NPAPI, the code of the Netscape Plugin Application Programming Interface from version 85 is to be removed from Firefox, as Ghacks reports. In a first step, the Firefox interface is to be adapted so that there are no longer any references to support for NPAPI plug-ins. Tests should also be switched off or removed that no longer work due to the missing plug-ins. There are also plans to clean up critical areas of the browser’s code base with regard to NPAPI support.

The implementation of these steps should begin as soon as Firefox 85 reaches the beta channel. For users of nightly and beta versions, it should be noted that in general, from reaching version 85, you will have to forego Flash support, i.e. even before January 2021.

However, Adobe offers a back door for users who still depend on Flash content after January 2021. You can use the Extended Support Release (Firefox ESR). It should support Flash until July 2021. In addition, Adobe offers at least companies the opportunity to play content with the Flash Player after January 13th – however, a browser that still supports the Flash plug-in is always required.
