Although the counting of votes in the U.S. election is still underway and Democrat Joe Biden is ahead in four decisive states, President Donald Trump wrote on his Twitter that he won the election.
“I WON THIS ELECTION, FOR A LOT!”, Wrote Trump this Saturday morning (11/07 local time).
Moments after the publication, Twitter had already placed a warning sign in the message from the US president, clarifying that official sources may not have yet released the election results when the message was published.
The alert leads to the page where Twitter clarifies that no winner is defined and that the ballots continue to be counted. It also points out that results are expected in six states: Georgia, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Nevada, North Carolina and Alaska.
As of Saturday morning, Biden had secured 253 votes at the electoral college, and Trump, 214. In addition, Biden appears ahead in four decisive states: Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and Pennsylvania.
Trump only appears ahead in Alaska and North Carolina.
It is not the first time that Trump says he won the election without knowing the outcome. On Wednesday, for example, he said he had won the election and accused Democrats of trying to defraud the process.
Here are the possible scenarios for Biden’s or Trump’s victory:
Earlier, Trump said, also on Twitter, that he will do what he called a major press conference in Philadelphia on Saturday. In a previous tweet, which has since been deleted, he said the press conference would be held by lawyers.
Trump made several unfounded allegations of electoral fraud, which were denied by local election officials. In addition, several of his messages have been contested by Twitter, with the warning that ‘Some or all of the content shared on this Tweet is contested and may be misleading about an election or other civic process.’
Communiqué released on Friday (06/11) by the Trump team accuses Democrats of resisting the “basic principle” that “all legal ballots should be counted and all illegal ballots should not be counted”, and says that Trump “will follow this process in all aspects of the law”.
Trump has repeatedly suggested that counting postal votes that arrive after election day is “illegal”. But overdue ballots can be counted in about half of the US states, as long as they have a postmark until November 3 (election day). This includes Pennsylvania, Nevada and North Carolina. And the deadlines for the arrival of a postal ballot vary from state to state.
“We will win this race with a majority beyond doubt,” said the candidate. “We had 74 million votes. This is more than any presidential ticket has ever had in the history of the United States.”
He celebrated the “reconstruction of the blue wall”, a reference to the conquest by his party, represented by this color, of Midwestern states that had won victory for Republican Donald Trump in 2016.
At the same time, Biden made a conciliatory speech, asking Americans to “leave anger and demonization behind”.
