This Saturday Portugal registered 56 more deaths by covid-19 and 6640 cases of infection. This is the biggest daily increase in infections, exceeding the maximum recorded on Friday (5550). It is also the second day with the most deaths since the start of the pandemic: 59 people died on 4 November. In total, the country accounts for 2848 deaths and 173,540 infections.
Of the new cases, 3900 (58.7%) were identified in the North, where 31 people died on the last day. In the region of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley, 1856 new cases (28%) were registered and 19 deaths occurred. The remaining deaths were registered in the Center (three) and Alentejo (three).
2420 people are hospitalized (minus five), of which 366 are in intensive care units (26 more). The number of inpatients in intensive care is the highest ever. The data were released in the daily update of the epidemiological bulletin of the Directorate-General for Health, with information related to the previous day.
With more than 3993 people who recovered, the total recovered rises to 97,747. There are a further 2591 active cases, for a total of 72,945. This figure results from the subtraction of recovered people and deaths from the total number of infections.
The overall fatality rate in the country is 1.6%. About 87% of the people who died with covid-19 in Portugal were over 70 years old: 2479 people.
Looking at the data by region since the beginning of the pandemic, it is concluded that the North region has the highest number of cases of infection (82,361) and deaths (1279). Lisbon and Tagus Valley account for 67,725 infections and 1109 deaths. The Center registers 15,757 cases of infection (712 more) and 352 deaths, the Algarve counts 3,367 cases (more 82) and 29 deaths and Alentejo totals 3361 infections (49 more) and 63 deaths. In the Azores there are 435 cases (plus 22) and 15 deaths and Madeira has 534 infections (plus 19) and one death by covid-19.
