It comes as removed a fast-growing group in which Trump supporters posted threats of violence.

The “Stop The Steal” group, which called for “boots on site to protect the integrity of the voting”, gained a thousand new members every 10 seconds and grew to 365,000 members in one day.

“The group was organized around the delegitimization of the electoral process, and we saw worrying calls for violence from some members,” said a Facebook spokeswoman.

While the protests in front of the counting stations have not been violent or very large, the harassment of the electoral staff has affected local officials.

Michigan’s Attorney General Dana Nessel tweeted a request to “stop making harassing and threatening calls.”

“Asking them to push snipers in uncomfortable places is never appropriate and a sad comment on the state of our nation,” wrote Ms. Nessel, a Democrat.

She was referring to a false conspiracy theory that told Trump supporters to fill in ballot papers with Sharpie markers instead of regular pens so their votes would not be counted by the machines.

Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs told CNN that her main concern is staff safety, but the sheriff’s deputies provide protection.

She said the protesters “caused delays and disruptions and prevented these employees from doing their jobs”.

Around 100 Trump supporters again gathered outside the Maricopa County polling center in Phoenix on Thursday, some of them carrying military-style rifles and handguns. Arizona law allows people to openly carry guns.

Authorities at the center used fences to create a “free speech zone” and keep the entrance to the building open.

The crowd took turns singing “Count the Votes” and “Four More Years” and complaining over a megaphone about the voting process.

Some briefly pursued a man who was holding up a sign depicting the president as a Nazi pig behind a stage, on which right-wing talk radio host Alex Jones was speaking.

“They’re trying to steal the elections, but America knows what happened and it’s fighting back,” Jones told the crowd.

“1776 is the answer to 1984,” he said, an obvious reference to the US Declaration of Independence and George Orwell’s dystopian novel.

The group paused to listen as Mr. Trump spoke from the White House, where he reiterated many of his unsubstantiated claims of rigged voting.

They hooted and clapped as the president said, “We are on the right track to win Arizona.” However, Mr. Biden remains at the top there, albeit by a small margin of more than 47,000 votes.

Both sides held rallies in Philadelphia on Thursday, during which election officials slowly counted thousands of postal ballots
that could decide Pennsylvania’s crucial 20 Electoral College votes.

Trump activists waved flags and carried signs reading “Election Day Stops” and “Sorry, Polls Are Closed” as Biden supporters danced to music behind a barricade across the street.

Late Thursday, Philadelphia police said they were investigating an alleged conspiracy to attack the city’s Pennsylvania Convention Center, where votes were being counted.

The police arrested at least one man and confiscated a weapon. No injuries were reported.

In Atlanta, around 100 singing Trump supporters gathered outside the State Farm Arena when the votes were counted. Several Atlanta police officers monitored the scene.

50-year-old Tom Haas, who said he had traveled to Atlanta from Chicago on business, said he was convinced Mr. Trump won the election.

“There is obvious electoral fraud and it comes from the larger democratic cities,” he said. “Atlanta is one of them.”

“Our democracy is under attack,” he said, repeating Mr Trump’s language.

A few dozen Trump supporters gathered outside the Detroit Convention Center Thursday morning as election officials counted the postal vote.

The protesters held signs saying “Stop the Steal” and “Stop the Cheat”.

In Las Vegas, around 100 supporters of the president sang as they stood on the street in front of the election offices.

In Milwaukee, around 50 Trump supporters gathered outside a city building where votes were counted to play country music, wave flags, and carry signs saying “recount” and “rigged”.

About a dozen counter-protesters arrived after an hour and shouted “black matter of life” and “say their names” referring to the victims of police brutality.

Others threw eggs at Trump supporters from a passing car.

“The future of my country brings me here tonight,” said Mitchell Landgraf, a 21-year-old construction worker who cast his first vote in a presidential election for President Trump. “I’m afraid if it goes in one direction this country will quickly go downhill.”

Mr Trump’s campaign has called for a recount in Wisconsin, where Mr Biden was declared the winner by a wafer-thin margin.
