A trailblazer throughout her career, Kamala Harris is poised to make history as the first female black Indian-American vice president.

Democratic candidate Joe Biden is one of the party’s best-known figures and launched her own bid for the presidency last year.

But the early promise of Ms. Harris’ campaign faded and she withdrew from the White House race and instead supported her former rival, Mr. Biden.

He named the California senator a fellow campaigner that summer and made history by choosing the first black woman to run on a major party presidential ticket.

Born in Oakland, California in 1964 to a Jamaican-born father and an Indian-born mother, Ms. Harris said she was inspired to fight injustice by her mother, an activist and researcher.

After graduating from Howard University and studying law at the University of California, she began her career in the Alameda County Attorney’s Office.

She won her first election in 2003 when she became a district attorney in San Francisco. When she was elected attorney general in California in 2010, she was the first woman and black person to hold the job.

After she was elected to the Senate in 2016, she quickly became aware of her assertive questioning of administration officials during Congressional hearings.

The 56-year-old started her presidential campaign in early 2019 with the slogan “Kamala Harris for the People”, a reference to her work in the courtroom.

She was one of the most famous contenders in a crowded Democratic elementary school, drawing 20,000 people to her first campaign rally in Oakland.

Facing problems with fundraising, Ms. Harris abruptly withdrew from the race in December 2019, two months before the first primary votes were cast.

After Mr. Biden selected Ms. Harris as his runner-up in August this year, Mr. Biden praised her as “smart, she is tough, she has experience, she is a proven fighter for the backbone of this country”.

“Kamala knows how to rule. She knows how to make hard calls. She is ready to do this job on the first day, ”he said.

Singer-songwriter John Legend was one of the famous faces who praised the former vice president for his decision.

Ms. Harris lives in Los Angeles with her husband, entertainment attorney Doug Emhoff, who has often accompanied her on the campaign and is the stepmother of his children Ella and Cole.
