But, as in previous elections, there were others. And some can steal decisive votes from the two main candidates.

In these elections, Jo Jorgensen, of the Libertarian Party, is third in the race and, although far from the favorites, she has more votes than those who separated and Biden in states like Nevada or Georgia, where the election will be decided.

As of Thursday (11/05), 63-year-old Jorgensen had accumulated more than 1.6 million votes, 1.1%, the second best vote the Libertarian Party won in its history in the presidential elections, behind only of the percentage received by candidate Gary Johnson and his running mate, Bill Weld, in 2016.

But who is the candidate and what does she propose?

Entrepreneur and politics

Jorgensen, born in 1957 in Illinois, has been a member of the Libertarian Party since 1983, which describes her as “bold, fearless and kind”.

Psychologist, mother of two and grandmother, she holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Southern Methodist University and a PhD in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Clemson University, where she also teaches Psychology courses.

She was a marketing representative for IBM; later owner and president of DigiTech, a software backup company; and, since 2002, it offers consultancy to other companies, according to its campaign data.

In addition to her professional activity, she is a former member of the libertarian movement, although she has never held any elected public office.

In 1992, she was a candidate for the United States House of Representatives for South Carolina, and in 1996 she was a candidate for vice presidency, with Harry Browne as leader of the ticket.

This year, she became the party’s first female candidate for the United States presidency.

During his campaign, he proposed the creation of a health system based on the free market, without the intervention of the State or insurance companies.

She also pledged to eliminate income tax, end the war on drugs, abolish the government’s drug enforcement agency Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), forgive those guilty of nonviolent drug-related crimes and encourage drug addicts to seek aid and rehabilitation.

Its platform also proposes an end to subsidies for large corporations, legalizing marijuana and returning US troops currently in conflict zones.

Who are libertarians?

Created in 1971, its motto is: “Minimum government, maximum freedom”.

Libertarians are opposed to “any government interference in people’s personal, family and business decisions”, to excessive government spending and believe that taxes should be drastically cut or eliminated.

For them, the role of the government should be limited to simply helping people to defend themselves from the use of force and fraud.

In social matters, they are characterized by the defense of individual freedom and of more liberal and tolerant positions.

They consider that each individual has the right to control his own body, his actions, his word and his assets – and they also speak out in favor of the right to have weapons.
