PS5: Sony takes it to the next level

To say that the release of the PlayStation 5 is expected from gamers would be an understatement, with experts even predicting a sales record for Sony’s new console. A few days before its launch, The newspaper tested it … and the result is frankly impressive.

The craze is fully justified, as the author of these lines was able to see when testing the new PlayStation before it arrived in stores on November 12. New design, new features, increased power … Sony invites gamers into a whole new stunning world.

First observation? Sony has given its good old PlayStation a complete makeover. The new console, now two-tone rather than monochrome, is particularly attractive with its modern design.

It’s chic, it’s elegant. And that’s good, because the console itself is rather massive, much more than the previous versions (we made the leap by opening the box). This is, however, a (very) slim price to pay for the unparalleled power that the PlayStation 5 offers.

Faster, more powerful

And it is exactly on this point that Sony is changing the game when it comes to video games. Because yes, their new console offers an absolutely impressive performance. Thanks to its solid-state drive (or solid-state drive, for insiders), the PlayStation 5 is now capable of ultra-fast, even instantaneous loads.

What does that mean, concretely? Gone are the endless waits and pauses imposed by the loading screens between each level, section or universe of a game. The experience is thus completely fluid, without hazards or downtime coming to block the rhythm.

Speaking of fluidity, the technology of the PlayStation 5 delivers absolutely stunning graphics, even more so than its predecessor. The home screen (completely revised, by the way) already let us predict a clear improvement at this level, but it is by testing the new Spider-Man : Miles Morales that we have discovered its real extent. New York appears to us more realistic – and magnificent – than ever, just like the famous masked vigilante. We can not wait to discover this visual richness in the highly anticipated Assassin’s Creed : Valhalla and Demon’s Souls, both launched in the coming days.

Other notable improvements include backward compatibility, offered for the first time by Sony. In fact, players can now use their PS4 games – digitally or on disc – from their new console. Good news for those who were until now condemned to buy their favorite games to enjoy them on each new console.

In short, we love. A lot, even. And our portfolio too.

Comfortable grip

The gamepad, too, sports a new, more modern look. A tad larger than that of the PlayStation 4, it is also more rounded and, ultimately, more comfortable. Your wrists will see a marked difference after several hours of continuous play.

But it also opens the door to a host of new functions thanks to its DualSense technology (rather than the traditional DualShock). Examples ? Adaptive triggers, now capable of varying degrees of force and tension depending on the actions taken by the player. We also particularly appreciate its haptic feedback, allowing a wide range of more nuanced physical sensations.
