The space rock was named VP1 in 2018, but was also known as the “Election Day Asteroid” when it was swung from our planet on the eve of the US elections. According to NASA, the asteroid had a one in 240 chance of colliding with our planet on November 2nd.

Fortunately, it swung from Earth about the same distance from our planet as the moon.

However, the asteroid was only ten feet wide, and even if it had collided with our planet, it would likely have just been burned in the atmosphere.

Astronomy site Space Weather said, “Asteroid 2018 VP1 approached Earth on November 2nd … and missed.

“The 10-foot-wide space rock had a 1 in 240 (0.41 percent) chance of hitting our planet on the eve of US Election Day, but no fireballs or impact infrasound were detected.

“Break out the Oreos and let the choice begin!”

Planet astronomer Michael Busch added on Twitter: “Apparently there was nothing on the infrasound and atmospheric flash monitors today.

“2018 VP1 flew past Earth as expected.”

Because it is so close to Earth, NASA labeled the asteroid a Near Earth Object (NEO).

“Likewise, today’s asteroids are the pieces that are left over from the initial agglomeration of the inner planets, which include Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars.

“Comets and asteroids are primitive, leftover building blocks of the process of formation of the solar system, providing clues to the chemical mixture from which the planets were formed around 4.6 billion years ago.

“If we want to know the composition of the primordial mixture from which the planets were formed, we have to determine the chemical components of the remaining debris from this formation process – the comets and asteroids.”
