Itamaraty confirmed on Thursday evening (10/29) that a 40-year-old Brazilian woman was one of three fatal victims of a knife attack in Notre-Dame de Nice, France, in the morning.

“The Brazilian Government informs, with great regret, that one of the fatal victims was a 40-year-old Brazilian woman, mother of three, resident in France. President Jair Bolsonaro, on behalf of the entire Brazilian nation, presents his deep condolences to his family and friends of the citizen murdered in Nice, as well as those of the other victims, and extends their solidarity to the French people and Government, “wrote the Itamaraty in a note.

Earlier, the French policeman had claimed that, in the attack classified by French President Emmanuel Macron as an “Islamic terrorist attack”, an elderly victim was “practically beheaded” and that a man and a woman had also died.

According to reports, the woman – who is now known to be the Brazilian – managed to escape to a nearby cafe after being stabbed several times, but did not resist her injuries and died.

“Itamaraty, through the Consulate General in Paris, provides consular assistance to the family of the Brazilian citizen who is a victim of the terrorist attack”, informed the Brazilian government.

Nice attack takes place almost two weeks after the death of a teacher outside Paris

The murdered man was between 40 or 50 years old and had his throat cut, according to the French press. He would be responsible for maintaining the basilica and leaves a wife and two children.

French police sources named the suspect as Brahim Aioussaoi, a 21-year-old Tunisian who arrived by boat on the Italian island of Lampedusa in September. He was quarantined for coronavirus before being released and advised to leave Italy. Aioussaoui arrived in France earlier this month.

The attack in Nice comes almost two weeks after the death of Professor Samuel Paty at a school outside Paris.

According to French police, Paty was beheaded by Abullakh Azorov, 18, for showing his students cartoons of the prophet Muhammad, a holy figure in Islam, as part of a lesson on freedom of expression. Azorov was shot dead by the police.

In July 2016, Nice was the scene of another attack on a larger scale. A truck ran over several people who were watching fireworks in celebration of July 14, Bastille Day, killing 86 people and injuring 500 others.

The attack ended after an exchange of fire with the police, who killed the driver, identified as Tunisian Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, 31, who lived in France.
