A popular puppy who greeted guests at the new Adelaide Oval Hotel was beaten to death just weeks after the venue’s long-awaited opening.
Important points:
- Charli the puppy was killed by another dog while taking an evening walk
- The puppy was featured at the hotel’s official opening last month
- Hotel staff say the loss is “heartbreaking”.
Charli, a 20 week old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, played a prominent role at the hotel’s official opening ceremony last month.
The hotel said Charli was attacked by another dog on Wednesday night while walking in a suburb.
“It is with a heavy heart that we have to announce that we have said goodbye to Charli, our beautiful puppy from the Oval Hotel, who has passed away,” says a post on the hotel’s Facebook page.
“Losing her like this is heartbreaking. We will miss her so much. “
The public expressed their sympathy and support through comments on social media.
The hotel said the incident had been reported to the local council but declined to say where the attack took place or to provide any other details.
The Adelaide Oval Hotel officially opened on September 25, but the project was fraught with controversy and financial concerns.
Last month, a report from the SA’s General Auditor found that the Adelaide Oval Stadium Management Authority (SMA) had lost significant revenue due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The agency has received a taxpayer-funded $ 42 million loan to build the 138-room oval hotel.
Earlier this month, two cyclists in Hallett Cove were reportedly attacked by a pack of five dogs.
In May, another dog was captured on video surveillance while attacking a man outside a laundromat on Brighton Road, Adelaide.
Canine behavior expert Celina Rebola said despite these incidents, it was relatively rare for dogs to attack other dogs.
But she said some dogs could do more harm if they got violent, simply because of their size and strength.
Ms. Rebola, a PhD student at Flinders University, said dogs that became violent are more likely to be poorly socialized or may react to their owner’s excitement.
“I wouldn’t consider it common in relation to the number of interactions between dogs … very few would lead to abuse,” she said.
She added that owners will be held responsible for their dog’s behavior.
