The search for the remains of a young autistic boy who is believed to have been buried under his family home more than 50 years ago continues.

Maureen Anne Enright, 76, was remanded for the murder of her Son Peter John Enright, who went missing between 1968 and 1969 between the ages of three and four.

As a high need autistic boy, Peter was the fourth of eleven children of Maureen and her husband Michael who died in 2018.

Peter, who would have turned 55 in June if he were still alive today, has never been reported missing and is now the subject of one of Australia’s oldest homicide probes.

Homicide Inspector Damien Hansen told reporters that Peter was born on June 17, 1965.

They spent Thursday removing decades of rubble from under the house and scanning underground radar.

“Time causes problems, but … it was a fascinating case,” Det Insp Hansen told reporters at the scene.

“We’re looking for a body. We are optimistic at this point, but that will depend on many environmental factors … time and soil acidity. ‚

Murder detectives are assisted by investigators from the Child Trauma Unit and the Inala Child Protection Unit as they conduct investigations into Operation Sierra Bobcat.

Det Insp Hansen said Maureen gave the police “a number of versions” of events and all family members were being questioned about the disappearance.

He added that Peter’s siblings had heard stories about him and police had collected records of his existence, including a birth certificate.

“They were aware that Peter existed and they gave us versions of it,” he said.

“It’s just a shocking thing that these things can happen, but the processes in the 1960s were obviously very different than they are today.

“This is the first time I’ve come across something like this.”

Detectives have asked anyone who lived on Polaris Street in Inala during the 1960s and 70s to contact the police if they have any information.

“They were pretty well known, some of the neighbors have been here a long time,” said Det Insp Hansen.

Police will accuse Maureen Anne Enright, 76, of murdering her son on a date between September 9, 1968 and February 28, 1969.

She appeared shortly before the Richlands Magistrates Court on Thursday, where her case was adjourned on December 11 for a mandatory mention

The frail elderly woman was accompanied by three women and needed the help of a correction officer to enter the dock.

The police have until November 27 to file their pleadings in court and Ms. Enright will not have to appear in court for the December hearing.

Defense attorney Jyoti Pant told reporters in court that her client would apply to the Supreme Court for bail.

“She is frail, she is vulnerable and understandably her family is very concerned, she is concerned, we are concerned,” said Ms. Pant.

“Our main concern at the moment is to get her home on bail and with her family.

“We just received material related to the indictment, and we’ll go over that later today.”
