As the country begins its first day of Level 5 restrictions, Ireland has seen another surge in some cases.

Another 1,066 cases were confirmed Thursday, while sadly three more deaths have been reported.

The death toll in Ireland is now 1,871 while a total of 54,476 cases have been confirmed.

Dr. Commenting on today’s numbers, Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, said, “We are now in Level 5 as the disease in our country is very serious and poses a significant public health risk.

“We must all stay home except for essential work and exceptional circumstances. If you are a confirmed case at home isolating yourself when you are in close contact with a confirmed case, limit your movements at home if you have symptoms or think you are in close contact – limit your movements and contact your GP. ”

Professor Philip Nolan, chairman of the Irish Epidemiological Modeling Advisory Group for NPHET, added that the country could only see fewer than 100 cases per day over the next six weeks if lockdown measures were followed.

He said: “The national reproduction number is 1.3-1.4. It is now our common goal to suppress the transmission of the virus and to bring our case numbers to a manageable level.

“If we work hard together to get the reproductive count down to 0.5, we should be able to bring the cases down to below 100 a day in six weeks.”

A number of counties saw another leap in cases as the country braced itself for severe restrictions.

244 cases were in Dublin, 104 in Galway, 98 in Cork, 92 in Meath and the The remaining 528 cases are spread across all of the remaining counties.

Meanwhile, Cavan is still a worrying county with the highest incidence rate of 14 days in the country. Another 56 cases will be confirmed there tonight.
