Expand capacities to produce ecological cement

After several months of tests, the experimental plant installed at the Central University “Marta Abreu” in Las Villas, began the production of low-carbon ecological cement (LC3), encouraging news that opens possibilities to expand the use of this much-demanded resource in the manufacture of houses and construction materials.

As a result of the collaboration between the house of higher studies and the Geomining Company of the Center, this entity has manufactured some 40 tons of the assortment, made from clinker, clay, carbonate and gypsum, recognized Dr. José Fernando Martirena Hernández, director of the Center Research and Development of Structures and Materials of the UCLV.

Currently, the small manufacturing unit, to which several adjustments have been made, produces about four tons of LC3 per day, and when it is at full production, it will be able to double that figure, said the renowned scientist from Villa Clara.

To extend the experimental test to the industrial production of ecological cement, work is being done at the “Fabric Aguilar Noriega” Mechanical Plant, in Villa Clara, in the manufacture of another 16 mills of that type, said Martirena, who added that the first is 90% completion and will be located in the municipality of Remedios.

Among the advantages of low-carbon cement – LC2, an extension of the traditional one, has already been produced – are a lower manufacturing cost compared to the well-known P-35, the reduction between 20 and 30% of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere , and that, with small investments, the current quantities of Portland cement can be duplicated, very easily and in the existing lines in Cuba, reaching properties similar or superior to this.
