20 French MPs call for recognition of the “Nagorno Karabakh Republic”

About twenty French deputies called on Paris Thursday to recognize “quickly” the separatist “Nagorno Karabakh” republic, which is witnessing armed confrontations between Azerbaijan and the Armenian armed forces.
In a resolution they presented in the National Assembly and the chances for discussion appear slim, the deputies Francois Poponi (the Liberties and Land Bloc) and Guy Tessier (the Republicans) call on the French government to “quickly recognize the Republic of Artsakh and establish diplomatic relations with its authorities with the aim of reaching a final solution to the conflict.”The text was signed by about twenty deputies, most of them from the Republican Presidential Party forward, the Republican Party (right) and the Democratic Movement (center) and a socialist deputy.

The text affirms “the absolute necessity for the Supreme Karabakh to acquire its full sovereignty outside any Azerbaijani administration under pain of eliminating the Armenian population, within final borders defined in pluralist negotiations with the participation of Artsakh authorities.”

The text also calls for “a final settlement of the conflict that guarantees the permanent security of the civilian population.”

Hundreds of people participated in a demonstration demanding “recognition of Artsakh” before the French National Assembly in Paris, at the invitation of the Coordinating Council of Armenian Organizations in France, which welcomed the initiative of the French representatives.

On the other hand, more than 170 elected officials, including Socialist Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo and President of the Republican Party in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Laurent Fouquet, called on France to abandon its position of neutrality regarding the “Azerbaijani aggression against Armenians” in Nagorny Karabakh.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian had rejected the calls of French parliamentarians to stand with the Armenians in the conflict, stressing the need for Paris to be “impartial” because of its position as a mediator in the crisis.
