Thousands of Australians stranded in the UK and India are set to be brought home to Darwin on Qantas flights as part of a federal government plan announced on Friday.
About 1,000 Aussies are expected to be flown to an RAAF base on charter flights each month and then taken to the Howard Springs quarantine facility for 14 days.
The program is expected to be announced by Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Northern Territory Prime Minister Michael Gunner in Sydney and is expected to be implemented within a few weeks.
It is expected that approximately 1,000 Aussies will be flown to an RAAF base on approximately eight Qantas charter flights per month
Aussies will likely be asked to pay some of the cost of their tickets, possibly up to $ 2,000.
They are also expected to pay for their Howard Springs quarantine – which currently costs $ 2,500 per person – but a loan program will be offered to those who cannot pay immediately.
A government spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia: “Ports are available for charter flights without direct commercial international flights, as has been the case with Darwin with workers from the Pacific Islands in recent weeks.
“With more space for quarantine facilities and fewer domestic travelers quarantined, the Morrison government worked with the NT government to finalize the Howard Springs quarantine arrangements to allow more Australians to return from overseas. ”
Scott Morrison said in Cairns on Thursday he expected more Aussies could return home within a few weeks.
“Much preparation has been made and we are in the final stages of finalizing these agreements,” he said.
“We have been working for a few months now as we bring more and more Australians home, especially in vulnerable situations.”
The program is expected to operate flights from India and the UK as these are the countries where most of the Aussies try to get home.
Daily Mail Australia has contacted Qantas for a comment.
Approximately 30,000 Australians have been stranded overseas and unable to return home due to arrival restrictions imposed at the request of state governments.
The federal government has been working with states for months to raise the upper limits.
