The moon may have crashed fragments and remains of Venusian rocks on its surface. A new study by Yale University researchers Samuel Cabot and Gregory Laughlin suggests that asteroids and comets hitting the surface of Venus could have displaced up to 10 billion pieces of rock in orbit.

Research also claims that these rocks may have moved toward the intersection of the Earth and Moon orbits. After all, some of them may have been attracted to the lunar surface due to their gravity on Earth. These rocks could be buried deep in their surface due to severe geological activity or disappeared due to changing atmospheric conditions.

Scientists believe that such cases of catastrophic asteroid collisions occur roughly every 100 million years, but were quite common a billion years ago. In addition, it was concluded that Venus had an Earth-like atmosphere 700 years ago. After that, the planet experienced an extreme greenhouse effect that made the atmosphere on Venus completely hellish. As a result, the Venusian atmosphere is so dense that no stone can escape its atmosphere.

Both scientists have cited in their work, published in the Planetary Science Journal, that asteroids hitting Venus move faster than asteroids moving toward Earth. This is followed by the expulsion of a large amount of rock from the Venusian surface to the vicinity of the earth and moon. The researchers have also said that these rocks land on the moon as Venusian meteorites.

In addition, Professor Laughlin hopes that these ancient fragments of Venusian meteorites will provide important insights and information related to the history of Venus, planetary science, as well as that of asteroids and comets. There are chemical tests that can decipher the origin of rocks on the moon as different ratios of elements and isotopes to shed light on the origin of every planet in the solar system.
