Police tracked the man believed to be driving a stolen vehicle to a property on Minnesota Road in Hamlyn Terrace Thursday morning.

The streets around the street have been closed and residents have been told to avoid the area.

Witnesses told 7NEWS the male suspect shot officers visiting the property.

The police were able to shield themselves behind their vehicles before they returned fire.
