The Notorious BIG, one of seven posthumous newcomers this year, received a lot of love during the tribute to its groundbreaking achievement and pun. The other New York icons Nas and Jay-Z both appeared in the virtual ceremony, with the second joke that Biggie Smalls was so damn good that he was “a little worried about me as an artist.” Lin-Manuel Miranda called it the “undisputed sound of New York,” and friend / co-worker Diddy pounded repeatedly that Notorious BIG was not just one of the best, but the best of all time. Depeche Mode
Old Godfathers Depeche Mode definitely attracted the most random group of people – in a good way – to talk about their indelible effects during the virtual ceremony. Oscar winner Charlize Theron, who DM described as the “soundtrack of my life”, introduced the band. Everyone from Coldplay’s Chris Martin to ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons to Arcade Fire’s Win Butler and Chvrches’ Lauren Mayberry raves about the dark electronic pioneers. “In terms of sound, they were and are in the process of throwing away all rule books,” said Martin, adding that “Depeche Mode can make lost souls feel more found.” The current DM trio accepted the honor together on a split screen, and her easy joke made it the most pleasant speech by far. Andrew Fletcher joked about Dave Gahan stealing cars at the time, and the singer, in turn, thanked “all the promoters around the world who took a chance on a group of underdogs with eyeliners from Essex – and all of the wankers who did didn’t do that. ”
T-Rex
Ringo Starr – director of the 1972 T. Whitney Houston
