Baby Shark now has more than seven billion views on YouTube.
A song with a catchy melody and eye-catching graphics that caught the imagination of children around the world and made a number of parents and teachers roll their eyes – Baby Shark – made a new record on Monday and became the most watched video on YouTube with more than seven billion views. Released four years ago, Baby Shark beat the Puerto Rican pop song Despacito by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee.
What is the song about?
With a length of one minute and 21 seconds, the repetitive chorus “doo-doo-doo-you-you-you-you-you-you” of the song invites you to endless repetitions. Coupled with simple and easy-to-follow dance steps, it has become extremely popular with children, especially under five. Although it is unclear who the original writer of the song is, it is believed to be a popular American campfire song that was sung and recreated a number of times.
However, Baby Shark became a global sensation after being remixed and recreated by Seoul-based production company Pinkfong. The video of the English version of the song, sung by 10-year-old Korean-American singer Hope Segoine and released in June 2016, broke the record for being most viewed.
Although the song is in the public domain and is not owned by Pinkfong, the company was sued in 2019 by child songwriter Jonathan Wright, who recorded a version similar to 2011, arguing that he owned the copyright to his own setting of the material.

Baby Shark became an international hit, peaking at number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 2019 and also making it into the UK’s top 40 list. Pinkfong is said to have made about $ 5.2 million (rupees 38.66 billion) from YouTube streams alone. The song went viral first in Southeast Asia and then in the US and Europe.
It resulted in a spin-off live tour, merchandise, books, and more, as well as reworks of the song, including one with Luis Fonsi and another promoting hand washing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Viral internet trend
The song went viral on the internet in 2017 when numerous families and communities in Indonesia uploaded videos doing their versions of the dance.

It was used by law enforcement agencies for which they were also used. In Florida’s West Palm Beach, authorities played the song repeatedly to prevent homeless people from gathering in a public area.
Three Oklahoma prison workers were charged with cruelty after it was found they allegedly handcuffed inmates and forced them to stand up and listen to Baby Shark for more than two hours.

District Attorney David Prater had said at the time that playing the song repeatedly could have added “excessive emotional stress to inmates, who most likely have already suffered.”

Aside from Baby Shark, Despacito is one of the top five most watched videos on YouTube and the first video on YouTube to reach the milestone of seven billion views. The English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran’s Shape of you, the American rapper Wiz Khalifa’s See you again and Masha and the Bear – Recipe for a Disaster, an episode of a Russian animated series loosely based on children’s oral story.
The other record-breaking South Korean song was Psys Gangnam Style when it was the first video to get a billion views on YouTube and was titled Most Watched Video until it was dethroned by Justin Beiber’s baby.
