  • A hiker was strolling on a mountain trail in Utah when he came across cougar cubs and their very protective mother.
  • The adult cat chased the man for six minutes as he tried to escape.
  • The man eventually survived by throwing a stone in the direction of the cat and deterring him.

Going on a hike is usually a nice, relaxing way to get exercise and enjoy the outdoors. This type of activity is even more important these days as the coronavirus pandemic has brought life to a standstill in many areas, but a Utah man recently discovered that Mother Nature can be a little scary when you’re in the wrong place wrong time.

Kyle Burgess was walking down a remote trail and saw what he thought were little bobcats. As he slowly approached, he began filming, perhaps imagining he was taking pint-sized pictures of predators from a safe distance. He got a lot more than he expected.

As he got closer, it became clear that the cats weren’t bobcats at all, but cougar cubs. This was made all the more apparent when her mother showed up and sprinted at Burgess as he was desperate to pull back. The cat, with the protection of its offspring in mind, refused to flinch, and while Burgess did everything in his power to keep calm and still prevent an attack, the puma began to chase him.

Burgess stepped backwards for a full six minutes, repeatedly trying to get the cat to pull away. As time went on, the predator moved closer and closer, eventually pouncing on the hiker several times, throwing up dust and debris as he showed his intimidating portrayal. Nothing Burgess did – including the cat’s screaming and even hissing – seemed to phase the cougar.

The video is incredible for a number of reasons, not least due to the fact that Burgess manages to point the camera at the cat as he retreats down a rocky mountain path. It’s a pretty remarkable piece of footage, and you can definitely feel the intensity. Personally, my palms got sweaty when I saw it.

After all, Burgess does what most experts say you probably shouldn’t even try: he bends down to pick up a rock. Bending down or appearing small is basically an invitation to attack, as the cat sees this as a sign of weakness and uses it as an opportunity to engage in the kill. Fortunately, the cat does not advance and the hiker manages to throw a stone in his direction and scare him away.

It’s easy to see why Burgess didn’t want to take a stone at first. The cat was so incredibly aggressive that it seemed certain that if he took the time to look away and bend down, it would attack. Luckily it worked and neither Burgess nor the big cat were seriously injured.
