Dr. Joanna Swabe, Senior Director of Public Affairs at Humane Society International / Europe, said in an email from Amsterdam: “Denmark is one of the largest fur producers in the world, so all Danish mink fur farms have been completely closed amid spiraling COVID-19 infections, this is it a significant development. While this is not a ban on fur farming, this move signals the end of suffering for millions of animals that are kept in small wire cages on Danish fur farms for the sole purpose of trivial fur fashion that nobody needs. We commend the Danish Prime Minister for her decision to take such an essential and science-led step to protect Danish citizens from the deadly coronavirus and to ensure that the effectiveness of a vaccine is not compromised by mutations in the SARS-CoV-2 virus Mink host. Since COVID-19 has already been detected in 207 of the 1,139 fur farms in Denmark and as a result over 1.2 million minks have already been killed, the risk of these virus reservoirs remaining in operation is far too great. A decline in public demand for fur fashion has resulted in a significant drop in fur prices and inventories of fur skins that have not been sold at auctions. Although the death of millions of mink – whether killed for COVID-19 or killed for fur – is an animal welfare tragedy, fur farmers will now have a clear chance to turn away from this cruel and dying industry and choose a more humane and sustainable livelihood instead. HSI urges the Danish government to help fur farmers transition to other activities. There has never been a more imperative time for Denmark to shut down this ailing industry for good. ”
The first infections on mink fur farms were detected in April, and the government took the opportunity to stand up against the industry and call for all farms to close by March 2021. Over a million minks were killed during the pandemic.
