In a new study at the University of Cambridge, Britain, a team of researchers discovered what they think may be a relationship between Corona virus and stroke.
The study found that 14 out of every 1,000 patients with “Covid-19” admitted to hospital suffer from a stroke, as the team of researchers analyzed 61 published studies that covered more than 100 thousand patients who were hospitalized due to the Corona virus.
According to Russia Today, the rate of “Covid-19” patients who suffer from stroke is higher among the elderly.
The study also suggests that the rate of stroke sufferers among “Covid-19” patients is also higher among those who suffer from severe infection and pre-existing vascular disease. So scientists studied whether “Covid-19″ increases the risk of strokes or whether the association results from the spread of the virus in those who are already more likely to have a stroke.
For her part, Dr Stefania Nanoni, lead author of the study, from the Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Cambridge, said: “The picture is complex. For example, it is possible that a number of (Covid-19) patients are already at risk of stroke.
But other factors, such as the mental stress of (Covid-19), may also contribute to the risk of stroke. On the other hand, we see evidence that (Covid-19) may lead, or at least be a risk factor, for stroke, in some cases.
First, the emerging corona virus appears to be linked to a much greater risk of stroke than seasonal influenza.
Second, we see a certain pattern of stroke in individuals with (Covid-19), which indicates the existence of some relationship, perhaps causal, in a proportion of patients at least. ”
Just over 12 out of every 1,000 “Covid-19” patients admitted to hospital suffered a severe stroke, as blood flow was stopped due to the stroke, according to the study.
Professor Hague Marcus, who leads the Stroke Research Group in Cambridge, says: “Although the incidence of stroke among (Covid-19) patients is relatively low, the scale of the epidemic means that several thousand people could be affected worldwide. “.
Marcus continued: “Doctors will need to look for signs and symptoms of stroke, especially among groups at a particular risk, bearing in mind that the image of the patient at risk is smaller than expected.”
Brain haemorrhage was less common, occurring in 1.6 out of every 1,000 cases, and most of these patients were hospitalized with symptoms of “Covid-19” and suffered strokes after a few days.
Therefore, Dr. Nanoni recommends that all patients who enter the hospital with strokes be treated as “possible (Covid-19) cases until the examination results appear,” due to the possibility that they have mild respiratory symptoms associated with “Covid-19”, or without symptoms completely.
