New research found that the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) can be transmitted to the fetus during the mother’s pregnancy and can contribute to many developmental disorders and long-term neurological problems, according to scientists at Wuhan University in China.
And according to the British newspaper “The Sun”, “The cold sore virus is usually not harmful to adults, but it is known to be fatal to children with weak immune systems.”
The newspaper added that the virus “can spread quickly to children’s brains and cause multiple organ failure and ultimately death”.
Chinese researchers Bo Chen and Ying Wu said the results of the latest study “open up new treatment options for viral reservoirs associated with neurodevelopmental disorders.”
The researchers added, “This study provides new evidence that herpes simplex virus infection affects the development of the human brain and contributes to the hypothesis of a neurodevelopmental disorder.”
The child is more prone to contracting the virus in the first four weeks of life and can be transmitted in two ways:
1. During pregnancy and childbirth. If a mother had genital herpes for the first time in the last six weeks of pregnancy, her baby is at risk.
2. After giving birth. The virus can be passed on to the child through cold sores if someone who is infected with the virus or is about to become infected has kissed the child.
It can also be spread through blisters on the breasts of an HSV-1 infected mother.
