The US government has called for the deployment of high-speed 5G mobile internet to be delayed due to potential risks to aviation.
And Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Federal Aviation Administration Chairman Steve Dixon appealed to the two network operators (AT & T) and (Verizon) to postpone the scheduled launch after tomorrow, by up to two weeks.
The two officials also demanded that the two companies stop providing commercial C-Band service around certain major airports, until the end of March, to give the airports enough time to carry out the necessary tests, improvements and updates. Without this delay, Buttigieg and Dixon said there would be a risk of “widespread and unacceptable disruption” to air traffic, particularly in poor weather and poor visibility.
Otherwise, they warn, planes may have to divert to other cities, or cancel flights, causing ups and downs across the US air transportation system. The Federal Aviation Administration fears that 5G network technology will interfere with some aircraft electronics.
