Monday’s announcement comes just weeks before Emirates is due to take delivery of its last A380 from Airbus, ending an era in which double-decker passenger jets dominated the airline’s growth plans.
The company said in a statement that it had recovered usable components, such as engines, landing gear and flight controls, from the 13-year-old aircraft, which began its first commercial flight from Dubai to New York in August 2008.
The aircraft will now be dismantled into furniture, souvenirs and other retail items for sale. A portion of the proceeds from the sale will go to the Emirates Airline Foundation.
“It’s a great and fitting retirement solution for this iconic aircraft and our fleet captain,” said Tim Clark, president of the airline.
With no major secondary market, Emirates had no choice but to strip the world’s largest commercial airliner of reusable parts.
Airbus ended production of the plane in 2019, 12 years after its launch and no longer able to secure a continuous order book.
