Nevin Al Sukari - Sana'a - PRISTINA, Aug 4 — Kosovo authorities confirmed late yesterday that the remains of four people were found at a second mass grave in the country’s north, as investigations into a suspected 1990s war crime continue.
The discovery comes days after the remains of seven people were uncovered at a nearby dig site in the area of Zubin Potok — with officials believing there could be as many as 23 people buried near surrounding villages.
“During excavations conducted in Jabuka, the mortal remains of four people were found and exhumed, who, according to initial assessments, belong to victims of enforced disappearance during the war,” the Government Commission on Missing Persons announced in a press release.
The remains have now been sent for DNA testing to try to identify them.
But with the remains of 11 people now recovered from the two sites, prosecutors said the excavation and identification could take months.
Police have also arrested three men from the local area in recent days on suspicion of war crimes, according to prosecutors.
The discovered remains most likely belong to “23 Albanians who have been violently abducted, executed” in the spring of 1999, acting Prime Minister Albain Kurti said on Saturday.
The 1998-1999 war between independence-seeking ethnic Albanian guerrillas and Serbian armed forces killed around 13,000 people and left 4,000 missing.
