This is the Volkswagen ID4 X!

Volkswagen has already adapted the electric ID4 to a modified form. The brand has pulled the curtain from the ID4 X, with not only a different front, but also a different buttocks.

Car manufacturers sell their models in various markets and this often has consequences for the powertrains that are made available per market. The Volkswagen Group supplies its models all over the world, something that creates striking differences between its models. The South American Volkswagen Up, for example, was slightly different from the European one. In China, the differences are sometimes even more striking. Volkswagen supplies its models in the country through two joint ventures, which sell the same models in different forms. For example, Volkswagen in China sells two versions of the T-Cross, which differ from each other in terms of design. Now there is also a second version of the electric Volkswagen ID4: the ID4 X.

The Volkswagen ID4 produced by the FAW-Volkswagen partnership is called ID4 Crozz in China. That name is a nod to the ID Crozz Concept, presented in 2017, which served as the forerunner of the ID4. The ID4 Crozz is optically identical to the ID4 that Volkswagen supplies in Europe. Joint venture SAIC-Volkswagen has its own variant on the menu: the ID4 X. This is a rather special derivative. The X has a different front and a different rear than the Volkswagen ID4 known here.

Volkswagen ID4 X

The Volkswagen ID4 X has a completely different front bumper than the European copy. For example, the vertical closed ‘cooling openings’ are connected to each other by a black piece of shiny plastic. More striking, however, are the completely different headlights. Not only do they have a different layout, but also a completely new shape. They dive further into the front fenders with a thin spur. They are connected by an LED bar that plunges into the headlights more than with the European Volkswagen ID4.

Also at the back, the Chinese Volkswagen ID4 X is different from the ID4 as we know it. The rear lights have a completely different layout and are framed with black plastic that also gives the whole a different shape. The Volkswagen logo on the back is illuminated and the layout of the rear lights is completely different. The license plate of the ID4 X is also not in the rear bumper but is placed under the lighting on the tailgate. The rear bumper itself also has a different shape. The modified bumper work makes the ID4 X a thick 2.5 centimeters longer than ‘our’ ID4. In addition, thanks to a different adjustment of the chassis, the ID4 X is 1.1 centimeters higher on its legs than the Volkswagen ID4 that you can order in the Netherlands.

There are also differences in the interior. For example, the center console of the ID4 X has a different shape and, among other things, the layout of the buttons under the more angularly designed infotainment screen has been adjusted. It is striking that Volkswagen is installing an 85 kWh battery pack in both flavors of the ID4, i.e. the ID4 Crozz and the ID4 X, instead of the usual 82 kWh battery. Relevant for the Dutch market? No, but for the car enthusiast with a predilection for curious facts.
