Majority of the Dutch support a general lockdown

A small majority of the Dutch think that the country should quickly go into a complete lockdown for a few weeks. 56 percent of the inhabitants see this as the best solution to counteract the rising corona numbers. This is evident from an investigation by Heart of the Netherlands among more than 2500 people.

On Friday, the RIVM announced that more than 10,000 infections have been added since Thursday. The measures in force since Wednesday 14 October have not yet borne fruit. According to Rutte and De Jonge, it is still too early to see whether the measures have been taken. “You can only see that in a few days,” the prime minister told his weekly press conference Friday afternoon.

A large part of the Dutch agree. Almost a third of the population, 31 percent, would rather wait a few more days. For example, it could be checked whether the current measures are yielding anything and a decision can be taken on that basis. 12 percent of the respondents want to scale down the corona measures.

Short and hard or long and soft?

According to Hubert Bruls, chairman of the Security Council, the cabinet is looking into whether it wants to keep strict corona measures throughout the winter or to institute a hard lockdown for a few weeks. When we ask the panel to choose from those two options, 66 percent choose the overall lockdown. 28 percent would rather stick to the current more flexible measures all winter long, so that we do not have to go into a total lockdown.

Finally, we asked the participants whether the cabinet had waited too long with the current measures to combat the advance of the corona virus. 73 percent agree with that statement. 22 percent support the cabinet.

The Heart of the Netherlands panel currently consists of 35,000 members. Part of the panel is invited for each survey. This is done on the basis of the characteristics of the participants, such as political preference, gender, place of residence, age. All surveys are conducted under the guidance of pollster Maurice de Hond.
