Media reports spoke of the possibility of a SpaceX missile colliding with the Moon.

The company owned by American billionaire Elon Musk launched the “Falcon 9 Booster” rocket in 2015, but after the end of his mission he did not have enough fuel to return to Earth and instead remained swimming in space.

And the British “BBC” network quoted astronomer Jonathan McDowell as saying that “this collision will be the first for an uncontrolled rocket with the moon,” explaining that the impact of the collision will be slight.

McDowell continued: “For decades, there may have been 50 large objects completely missing, this may have happened several times before, and we did not notice it, but this would be the first confirmed case,” explaining that “the missile is basically an empty metal tank weighing four tons. And a rocket engine in the back, and if you could just imagine throwing that at a rock at 5,000mph, it wouldn’t be good.”

The company abandoned the rocket into high Earth orbit seven years ago after it completed the mission of sending a space weather satellite, on a million-mile journey.

The flight was part of the space exploration program for SpaceX, a commercial company that aims to transport humans to other planets.

Since 2015, the rocket has been subjected to different gravitational forces from the Earth, Moon and Sun, making its trajectory somewhat “chaotic,” according to Professor McDowell, of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in the US.

The rocket joined millions of other pieces of space junk, such as equipment that gets dumped into space after missions are completed and doesn’t have enough power to return to Earth.

The collision is expected to occur on March 4, when the rocket explodes while touching the surface of the far side of the moon, leaving a small artificial crater on the moon’s surface.
