Bill Gates revealed on his blog that 2021 was the most difficult year of his life as a result of his divorce from Melinda French Gates and the COVID-19 pandemic, as the Microsoft co-founder spoke in a post on GatesNotes about the difficulties he faced during the year, including ending his marriage to Melinda 27 years later.
“I know a lot of people are curious about my divorce,” Gates wrote in the blog post.
The couple announced that they separated in May and officially divorced in August, and Gates said, “I can’t deny that this year has been a very sad year for me.”
The billionaire said he and his ex-wife still run the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and they’ve found a good new rhythm of work.
It comes after the Gates Foundation announced in July that Melinda could step down as co-chair within two years if she and Bill cannot work together.
Gates also said that spending days without any human interaction during the Covid-19 pandemic, was a strange and confusing experience, and he continued, “My personal world has never felt smaller than it has been like during the past twelve months,” adding that it became empty after he left Two of his sons home recently.
“I went long periods of time without any face-to-face social interaction until I got vaccinated,” he said, emphasizing, “If I had a break between electronic meetings, I would walk around my yard just to see something different.”
Gates has been criticized this year for his encounters with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, an affair that Melinda warned her husband of.
