Virgin Galactic has revealed that 100 people have so far handed over $450,000 for a flight aboard its rocket-powered space plane, according to a digital trend report.

The total number of reservations for the upcoming space tourism service rises to 70,000, while the other 600 paid $250,000 before raising the seat price to $450,000 in the summer.

Virgin Galactic revealed details of ticket sales in its latest earnings report released on Monday, November 9. The company aims to launch a space tourism service at the end of 2022 that will send passengers about 55 miles above Earth for a few moments of weightlessness, as well as great views of Earth, before returning to Earth.

It had hoped to launch service in mid-2022, but said last month it needed more time to inspect its suborbital space plane VSS Unity, as well as VMS Eve, which flies the unit in the first stage of its flight, to confirm the vehicles’ chassis.

Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson recently demonstrated the company’s space tourism experience when he flew aboard VSS Unity, taking off and landing at Spaceport America in New Mexico. “We are entering our fleet enhancement period with a clear roadmap to increase the durability, reliability, and predictability of our vehicles in preparation for commercial service next year,” Michael Colglazier, CEO of Virgin Galactic, said in the company’s earnings report.

Colglazier added: “Demand for space travel is strong, and we are selling seats ahead of the pace we planned. This demonstrates the incredible market for our products and our appreciation for the value of the unique experience we provide.”

Virgin Galactic competes with Blue Origin – the company founded by Amazon chief Jeff Bezos – in the space tourism sector.

The first manned flight of Blue Origin sent Bezos and three others to the edge of space aboard a New Shepard suborbital rocket on July 20, nine days after Branson’s flight with Virgin Galactic. In October, Blue Origin made its second flight with a crew, detonating Star Trek legend William Shatner. And three more to the skies on a 10-minute-old flight, Blue Origin hasn’t yet revealed when the commercial space tourism service will be officially launched, nor has it said how much a ticket on its capsule will cost.
