As part of the virtual event “Synology 2021 and beyond”, Synology announced the availability of the beta version of DiskStation Manager 7.0 tomorrow. DiskStation Manager (DSM) is the proprietary operating system of the manufacturer’s NAS systems.
Improvements in every area
DSM 7.0 is seeing improvements in almost every area. These start with the security of the login to the DSM, which offers more options for 2-factor authentication and a new app called Synology Secure SignIn to confirm the login. The increasingly important area of SSD caching has also been improved. Among other things, writing data back from the SSD cache to the NAS’s HDDs is now up to three times faster than with the DSM 6.
The RAID rebuild, for example when replacing a defective hard disk, has been improved by only synchronizing those parts of the hard disk that are actually occupied with data. In addition, in the event of a drive failure, an automatic switch can be used to seamlessly switch to a cloned drive without affecting the storage pool. With RAID6, Synology promises a performance increase of more than 80 percent. Backing up an entire NAS system to another NAS is now possible with DSM 7.0.
Videos provide detailed insights
Synology has summarized the most important innovations of DSM 7.0 in a video. In further videos as part of “Synology 2021 and beyond”, the company also goes into detail on the aspects of hybrid cloud, data backup and photo management, which offers extended filters and folder management in a new design.
DSM 7 from tomorrow, don’t forget to backup!
Details on the Beta version of DiskStation Manager 7.0 and availability can be found on Synology’s dedicated website. Even though Synology has repeatedly postponed DiskStation Manager 7 in order to improve and guarantee the reliability and performance as comprehensively as possible before it is released, users should weigh up whether they want to upgrade their NAS to the beta or at least wait for the first reviews. Under no circumstances should the beta be used without an external backup of all data on the NAS.
Since September 2020, more than 6,000 beta testers have tested the new version in advance, and Synology claims that it has worked with several hundred security researchers to detect security gaps in advance.
Synology has not yet announced which NAS models the DSM 7.0 beta will be released tomorrow.
