The Mac M1 launched this week by Apple are definitely making a big splash. After learning that Apple had clearly not lied about the performance of its M1 chip compared to that of Intel, it is the turn ofiFixit and a user of the eGPU.io forum to reverse engineer the three machines in order to see what arrangements have been made inside these Macs to accommodate the Apple M1.

Let’s start with the MacBook Air and Pro, whose internal design turns out, according to iFixit, rather similar compared to Intel models. The only real difference between the MacBook Air M1 and the old MacBook Air is the ventilation, since the new model simply does not. Thus, Apple was able to save space inside the chassis and have a new aluminum heat sink near the motherboard. On the MacBook Pro M1 side, the changes are even less visible. We just have a new cooling system to eject the heat out of the chassis, and that’s about it. In either case, Apple’s M1 chip is not directly visible.

On the other hand, this is the case on the Mac mini M1, which has appeared on the forum. eGPU.io, and was spotted by iPhoneSoft. On this machine, the difference is much more visible: the logic board is much smaller than on the old Mac Mini, with a lot of empty space inside the chassis, and the M1 chip called APL1102 sits right in the center of the machine. the machine. As on the previous iteration of the Mini, the SSD is soldered to the motherboard, and, alas, so is the RAM which could previously be changed after the fact. It will therefore be advisable, as on the MacBook, to choose its configuration with the purchase because this one cannot be modified later. According to the first tests, the M1 chip nevertheless seems to be satisfied with very little RAM, and only 8 GB could well be sufficient for a large majority of users.
