Withings was busy. The first approved EKG that can be worn in Australia may be the big announcement on the cards for the French company this week, but it’s not the only one that’s showing up.
While the Withings ScanWatch is tracking your health, so can another company released gadget that works while you sleep. Literally.
The “sleep analyzer” provides a system that allows you to monitor your body and track your heart rate, sleep cycles, snoring signals and movements to determine the health of the sleeper. The technology is a little different from the other Withings wearables. It monitors breathing patterns to see if pauses indicate apnea and assesses not only your snoring but also the frequency of your snoring. Sensors monitor both respiratory rate and heart rate and provide this information via the app.
A pneumatic sensor does some of the heavy lifting and tracks movement through your mattress, an area called ballistocardiography. This allows Withings to monitor a person’s chest by moving the forces generated by the heart. For this to work, the Withings Sleep Analyzer stays connected to USB and monitors sleep, but talks to a phone or tablet via a wireless connection.
The approach reportedly allows Withings to have its sleep apnea information deliver similar results by using the Apnea-Hypopnea Index, also known as the “AHI”, which indicates whether you are at a particular risk for obstructive sleep Apnea.
With around 5 percent of Australians expected to have severe sleep apnea and another 20 percent in moderator forms, this is a problem that affects many Australians and may have a device like this on their hands. In use, people receive a “sleep score” with the sleep analyzer, which rates them according to their sleep patterns, and can even work with other Withings devices to gain more insight into the process and improve their overall sleep routine.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about the Withings Sleep Analyzer is that it works under a mattress and for the most part only sits and works there when you go to sleep. There is no need to turn it on, and when it detects body movement and snoring, it essentially hums in action.
While it works for most mattresses, Withings told Pickr that it wouldn’t work for everyone, specifically citing waterbeds as one that could cause a minor problem. We’ll check to see if this extends to extra bouncy beds, which can lead to excessive noise or movement, and Withings will check that you have an up-to-date and firm bed. However, there is a high likelihood that technology can keep track of what’s going on when you sleep.
To try, however, you’ll have to part with a few hundred dollars what the Sleep Analyzer will cost when it launches next week. The Withings Sleep Analyzer will be available on November 9th at JB HiFi in Australia for $ 199.
