[Update 11/03]: It looks like the WhatsApp advanced storage management tool is now moving to the stable builds of the cross-platform messaging app after being confirmed directly by WhatsApp. With this new tool, you can see what media and other items in your storage are being consumed. A handy chat-by-chat guide shows who has sent you the most content, sorted by the amount of space used on your device.
For those who end up in group chats where you get loads of crude oil almost every hour, this may be a great way to manage the size of your WhatsApp backup storage. A really nice option that wasn’t seen when the feature first came up was being able to see what content was being redirected the most. This can help to weed out the most annoying and frustrating storage media on your device.
[Update 09/21]: More information was shared by WABetaInfo Learn about WhatsApp logins for multiple devices. Some who were previously spotted in the WhatsApp beta update version 2.20.196.8 will now see a “Linked Devices” section indicating a nearby version for this enhanced usability.
It seems you can sign up for a beta with multiple devices that you can connect to even without an internet connection. We’re not entirely sure how to sync messages between devices without a web connection, but if it works, it works.
WABetaInfo suggests that you can use up to 4 devices at the same time if the “Linked devices” function will be available at a later date. They also indicate that when activated, you do not need to turn on your phone to light up the “No internet connection required” prompt.
As mentioned many times before, WhatsApp develops the best feature ever: you can use the same WhatsApp account with it 4 different devices at the same time.
What’s the advantage? You don’t need an internet connection on the main phoneThis is how you can use WhatsApp Desktop when, for example, your phone is switched off or other devices.
WhatsApp is currently planning a new modern user interface for the desktop client that shows how the chat history will be migrated from your device and that the process is encrypted throughout.
They also indicate that we can view all chat logs and chat history across devices, with the process fully encrypted end-to-end for better overall privacy. However, what the multiple device sign-in process will look like in WhatsApp is an entirely different question. We don’t see the option with the latest beta update yet. However, if you are enrolled, now may be the time to verify that the Linked Devices option is available.
[Update 08/24]: More information about the upcoming memory usage feature has surfaced with permission from WABetaInfo. With the upcoming memory usage feature, you can better manage how WhatsApp is using your smartphone’s storage space.
With a little more digging WABetaInfo found new references to advanced features like the ability to find forwarded and large files from chats and contacts. Essentially, you can instantly filter forwarded media and large files to make them easier to remove from your device and free up valuable storage space.
The upcoming Memory Usage menu has a handy bar that lets you visually see what’s clogging your smartphone. You can still see which chats are also taking up most of your internal storage. The contact picture and name are listed next to the space used.
It’s worth noting that none of the features mentioned are “live” yet, but active development is ongoing, which means we’ll likely see them in a future update.
[Update 08/10]: WABetaInfo was there again and this time discovered some more details about possible chat synchronization between devices if several devices are logged into a WhatsApp account. It’s worth noting that the feature isn’t available yet, but work is currently underway to provide a pretty important option for users with more than one mobile device or tablet.
When connected to Wi-Fi, you may be able to download and access breaking news on your linked devices. We already know that any limit of 4 devices can access your account. It’s not clear if this includes WhatsApp Web or if this is treated as a separate device in this case.
It also looks like once you’ve downloaded your messages to an access device, you don’t need an internet connection to use the application. However, we can envision blocking the ability to send and receive messages without an active data connection – be it mobile or Wi-Fi.
As of now, the only evidence of the iOS version of WhatsApp has been found, but we still expect feature parity if it rolls out soon. As for the release date, we’re still not sure as the multi-device option has been in the works since early 2020. Expect to find out more in the months ahead.
[Update 07/27]: WhatsApp enthusiast WABetaInfo has now found more information about the registrations of multiple devices. The feature looks like it’s called “Linked Devices” and gives you the ability to add and manage your connected devices. This looks like it will be limited to just 4 devices this time around, although this could be more than enough for most of the people out there.
The Facebook portal is also mentioned, although it bears an uncanny resemblance to the WhatsApp web connection feature, which allows you to send and receive messages from a connected laptop, Mac or PC at a time.
Unfortunately no further information was found, but it looks like this feature is being tested in at least internal beta versions. We’d love to see it in action on multiple mobile devices, but it’s clearly in the early stages of development.
Constant code digger WABetaInfo found a number of features that have been tested in the latest beta releases for iOS and Android. With probably the greatest interest, multi-device sign-in support is a feature that will really change the way millions of people around the world use the messaging platform. Not having to sign out across devices will save you a ton of frustration – something we reviewers would also really appreciate.
Currently, only one mobile device can be logged into WhatsApp, with another PC, Mac or web browser logged in. You can switch between these devices, but only one can be signed in at a time. This makes it difficult to use seamlessly, and switching devices is frustrating at best, especially since the sign-in process is so complicated and tedious.
We have to emphasize that multi-device support in WhatsApp beta builds is not yet available to users. It will likely come in a future update, however https://twitter.com/WABetaInfo/status/1271251475600154625?s=20 found that it is being tested with up to four devices logged on at the same time. This isn’t quite as high as it is with services like Telegram, but it’s still way better than the current limit of two devices.
Besides that, it looks like WhatsApp is getting some other important search updates as well. You’ll soon be able to search by date by browsing your existing conversations and group chats. This makes it much easier to find date-specific messages and images. Screenshots show the iOS version of this feature, but there will likely be an update to the Android beta channel soon. In addition to searching your messages by date, you can also search for messages on the web shortly. This is a nice little switch that you can use to search for news content using the in-app web browser.
There is also another advanced memory usage feature that lets you see how much memory is stored on your smartphone. This is a complete revision of the current section for storage information.
Another way that future updates will improve the overall WhatsApp experience on mobile is through the advanced features if you want to delete entire chats. You can delete all messages except those that you have marked with a star. This makes it easier to delete messages that you think are no longer necessary. This is slightly better than the basic Clear Chat option already available.
The final option to join the multiple device logins, advanced options for memory usage, search and chat deletion in WhatsApp is to support ShareChat videos. The service may be little known outside of India, but it is a social network that includes chat rooms and more. While none of these options are available to users just yet, it is a multitude of changes that will no doubt improve the overall experience with the cross-platform messaging app.
