Bethesda is working on a new game engine for the upcoming next generation games, The Elder Scrolls VI and Starfield, and now Todd Howard has been annoyed about how important the engine update can be.

He said at a recent event (via GI.biz) that the engine overhaul “is probably the biggest we’ve ever had, maybe bigger than Morrowind to Oblivion”. To support this, Bethesda is investing heavily in the team behind it. Howard said there are more people in Bethesda working “five times” on the engine than ever before.

The new Bethesda game engine will likely keep some of the things people know and love about the studio’s games, including support for mods and the general approach to open worlds, suggested Howard. That being said, fans can expect big changes.

“From rendering to animation to the procedural generation path … I don’t want to say everything, but it’s a major overhaul,” said Howard. “It took us longer than we would have liked, but it will power everything we do with Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6. Hopefully when people see the results they will be as happy as we are with what is on screen and how we can make our games. ”

When we could see the fruits of that labor, Howard said fans should get comfortable. The developer emphasized that he personally enjoys being able to announce a game and get it released in a relatively short time, as Bethesda did with Fallout 4 when it was announced at E3 in June and released just a few months later in November. There’s still no firm schedule for the proper announcement or release of The Elder Scrolls VI and Starfield, but Howard shared his high-level approach to keeping fans informed.

“You just don’t want to string them together for too long. You’re getting kind of tired, ”said Howard. “You have to balance the fatigue of wanting with the excitement of consumers. To be honest, it also takes time. The preparation of trailers, demos and assets takes time for development. I remember games we made this for several years and it’s like you have to outdo yourself. You have to outperform your previous demo. I’d rather spend all the time focusing on the game and preparing a big demo. ”

The Elder Scrolls VI and Starfield were announced with mood trailers at E3 2018, but with no gameplay or details on what to expect. Bethesda announced these games at the time to reassure fans that they were working on “classic” Bethesda games after the studio took a different approach with the multiplayer Fallout game Fallout 76.

Bethesda and its parent company ZeniMax were recently acquired by Microsoft for $ 7.5 billion. This is the second largest gaming acquisition in history. It’s not clear if The Elder Scrolls VI and Starfield will be exclusive to Xbox, and Phil Spencer can’t say more as it would be illegal to do so.
