Joe Fedewa

Halloween is the time of year when people like to get a little scary. Your home may already be decked out with ghosts and skeletons, but Google’s 3D augmented reality (AR) objects can take it to the next level.

You may not know this, but Google search has the ability to incorporate 3D objects into your surroundings using augmented reality. No special apps are required for this function. It works easily through the browser of your iPhone, iPad or Android device.

The 3D objects include dinosaurs, a variety of animals, planets, and other miscellaneous things. Google also includes a handful of items especially for Halloween:

  • Geist
  • Dancing skeleton
  • Jack-o’-lanterns
  • Dog in a hot dog costume
  • Dog in a pirate costume
  • Cat in a witch hat

To bring these creepy (and silly) objects into your world, you can use the Google app (iPhone, iPad, or Android) or the Google website in a mobile browser like Chrome.

The objects can be found by searching. Some of the terms you can use include “Halloween”, “Jack-O-Lantern”, “human skeleton”, “cat”, “dog”, and “German Shepherd”.

After finding the AR Halloween character you want, scroll down the Main Results tab and look for the 3D Object Card. Tap View In 3D to view the object in full screen mode.

Tap View in 3D

From here you can use your fingers to move the object around your screen, as well as pinching and unclipping it to resize the 3D character. Tap on “Show in your room” to integrate it into your real environment.

Tap on View in your area

You will be asked to move your phone around so AR technology can analyze the space and see how much space is available. The object is then displayed. You can move the Halloween object and scale it with your fingers.

Tap the camera shutter button in the middle of the screen to take a photo.

Move object and take photo

Drag the map open from the bottom of the screen to see related Halloween items. Tap one to place it on your phone’s screen.

Add a new object

That’s all there is to it! Add some of Google’s 3D AR Halloween creepy to your world.
