first benchmarks, it dominates the GeForce RTX 3080 in 4K

One of the AMD Big Navi references has been tested on the 3DMark platform. It is in all likelihood a Radeon RX 6800 XT. Its results give it a clear lead over the GeForce RTX 3080 from Nvidia. But the latter takes over when the Ray Tracing parameter comes into play.

We’re almost there, AMD will introduce its new RX 6000 graphics cards on October 28th. The appointment is made for next Wednesday but in the meantime, one of the GPUs of the next series has been tested on 3DMark Firestrike, 3DMark TimeSpy and 3DMark Port Royal, a benchmark is specially dedicated to Ray Tracing.

The identity of the GPU has not been specified. We just know that it has the code name E438. The AMD partner who initiated these tests told the WCCFTech site that this is an engineering sample of the Navi 21 XT GPU which corresponds to the Radeon RX 6800 XT graphics card whose characteristics and those of others leaked this week.

AMD: the Radeon RX 6800 XT outperforms an RTX 3080

The Radeon RX 6800 XT recorded a score of 12781 points on 3DMark Firestrike Ultra in 4K definition. For comparison, the GeForce RTX 3080 displays 10,531 points. AMD’s graphics card is therefore 21% more efficient than its rival and 56% faster than a GeForce 2080 Ti. The latter is indeed at 8210 points.

Still with 3DMark, but TimeSpy Extreme this time around, the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT managed to achieve a score of 8230 points in 4K definition. The gap here is much smaller, with the GeForce RTX 3080 just behind at 7978 points. This makes a 3% difference, but the gap is larger against the RTX 2080 TI and its 6933 points (19%).

Finally, the third and last test was carried out with Port Royal, the benchmark which measures the performance of graphics cards in Ray Tracing. It is clear that the RTX 3080 performs better than the AMD RX 6800 XT in this specific context. The AMD GPU scored 4387 points, compared to 5351 for the RTX 3080 and 4241 for the RTX 2080 Ti.

This means that the RDNA 2 generation which finally brings Ray Tracing to AMD will be behind in this area compared to the new GeForce RTX 3000 from Nvidia. But the card’s 3DMARK scores could improve further by the time the final version is released.
